Es ist Montagmorgen. Ihr Vertriebsleiter legt den Quartalsbericht auf den Tisch. Neukunden im Plus, Umsatz stabil — und trotzdem eine Zeile, die alles überschattet: 2.400 Kündigungen im letzten Quartal. Niemand hatte sie kommen sehen.

Dabei hatten diese Kunden über Wochen Signale gesendet. Unauffällig, aber messbar. Niemand hat sie gelesen.

Die Faustregel ist bekannt: Einen Bestandskunden zu halten kostet fünf- bis siebenmal weniger, als einen neuen zu gewinnen. Bei einem mittelständischen Unternehmen mit 50.000 Vertragskunden bedeutet eine Senkung der Kündigungsrate um nur zwei Prozentpunkte schnell einen sechs- bis siebenstelligen Effekt im Jahr.

Viele Unternehmen sitzen auf wertvollen Daten, ohne sie zu nutzen. Mit den richtigen Werkzeugen lassen sich daraus Erkenntnisse gewinnen, die direkt in strategische Entscheidungen einfließen.

90 % der Kunden, die einen bestimmten Teelichthalter kauften, bestellten auch eine Etagere.

Diese Information steckte die ganze Zeit in den Daten – aber erst die richtige Analysemethode machte sie sichtbar.

Für dieses Projekt habe ich einen realen Datensatz eines britischen Online-Händlers genommen: rund 540.000 Transaktionen, 4.335 Kunden, 3.660 Produkte. Und ihn bewusst aus drei verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht – mit drei Datenbank-Technologien, weil jede für andere Fragestellungen optimiert ist:

Jedes Data-Science-Projekt beginnt mit derselben, oft unterschätzten Frage: Wo fängt man eigentlich an? Die Antwort ist fast immer: beim Datensatz.

Bevor ein Machine-Learning-Algorithmus zum Einsatz kommt, muss man die Daten verstehen — inhaltlich wie explorativ. Wie sehen sie aus? Wie ist die Verteilung? Gibt es Auffälligkeiten? Dieser Schritt ist keine Pflichtübung, sondern die Grundlage für jede spätere Entscheidung.

In diesem Artikel gehe ich den vollständigen Workflow an einem konkreten Beispiel durch: von der Explorativen Datenanalyse (EDA) über die Datenaufbereitung bis zum Prototyping mit AutoML. Mit PyCaret – einem Tool, das verschiedene Algorithmen automatisch vergleicht – lässt sich schnell herausfinden, welcher Ansatz am besten zu den Daten passt.
